The Art of Writing: Author vs. Writer and What Sets Them Apart

The difference between an author and a writer is quite subtle, and the line can be very blurry. For this reason, the terms are often used interchangeably. But there's one thing that differentiates an author from a writer, and it is quite easy to understand.

Who is an author?

An author is someone who has written and published a book, article, or other written work, emphasizing the word "published." To be considered an author, you must have gone through publishing, be it traditional or self-publishing. Authors are most often recognized for their contributions to literature, and their works can be found in bookstores, libraries, etc.

Who is a writer?

A writer is someone who writes; whether or not their work has been published. Writing can range from creative writing, poetry, short stories, and novels, to technical writing, manuals, and white papers. Even if the article is not their own, or even if they write a journal or a movie script, a person can still be regarded as a writer; they could also be songwriters or content creators. The possibilities are endless; to put it simply, anyone who engages in writing for any purpose is regarded as a writer. The biggest similarity between the two is that they are both writers. Being an author makes you a writer. But being a writer doesn't make you an author.

What are the differences between an author and a writer?

The primary distinction between an author and a writer is that the former has had their work published, whereas the latter may or may not have.

Authors go through a rigorous process of writing, editing, and publishing their work. They sometimes work with literary agents, editors, and publishers to prepare their work for publication.

Writers may focus more on writing itself than the end product. A writer may write for personal enjoyment, as a means of self-expression, or as part of their profession. Writers are not concerned with getting their work published or distributed, as they may be more interested in writing themselves unless they are authors.

Whether you're an author or a writer, you are an important contributor to the world of literature. Keep creating amazing pieces that entertain and inspire.
