Key Keywords to Use in Your Cover Letter

Getting past the Application Tracking System (ATS) can be challenging. Every advertised position receives hundreds of applications, so you’ll need to make sure your cover letter and resume stand out.

Because your cover letter is first reviewed by the ATS, just like your resume, you’ll need to ensure your cover includes the right keywords. Also, a professional cover letter will often be the first thing a Human Resources manager reads after the resumes and cover letters have been dissected by the ATS.

First, look at the keywords used in the job description. The best job applications will explain what’s needed to meet the criteria.

The cover letter is easier to write if you have the position description available. Highlight each word or phrase you think is crucial to the position. Make sure you cover each point in your cover letter. Where possible, use the same phrasing as the job description.

For example, the position description says the successful applicant needs excellent leadership skills. In that case, your cover letter will need to have an example of how you’ve used your leadership skills in the past. Make sure you include the phrase exactly as it is in the position description and give examples of how you demonstrate this skill.

Using the keywords and phrases from the position description, plus incorporating the keywords those in the industry would understand, shows you have all the required elements for the job.

If you do not have one of the skills mentioned in the job advertisement, you can mention your willingness to undertake training for it. Writing this in the cover letter gives you an advantage as you will still use the keywords in the letter, ensuring the ATS approves your application. Plus, the Human Resources manager will appreciate your eagerness to learn new skills and to undertake further training while in the position.

Creating a cover letter should be job specific. You can put the job description elements in the same order within your cover letter. Keeping elements in the same order makes it easy for anyone (or a computer program) to check off each desired element. Using the keywords in your cover letter is as important as using the keywords in your resume.
