Cover Letter Writing Tips

  1. Make sure to include your contact information, the date and the employer’s contact information, just like a traditional letter.

  2. Always double-check your spelling, grammar and punctuation before pressing ‘send’.

  3. Use an appropriate font style and size– Comic Sans is not appropriate!

  4. Format your cover letter with contact information on the top left and the body of the letter left-justified.

  5. Make sure your cover letter doesn’t go over one page, including contact information.

  6. Always get another set of eyes to look over your cover letter before you send it off.

  7. Don’t lie, the employer or recruiter will know.

  8. Always include a cover letter with your resume, even if it isn’t a requirement of the application.

  9. Make sure to save it in Word or PDF format. Many employers won’t be able to open anything else.

  10. Try to avoid using graphics on cover letters and resumes alike. It tends to look tacky, and unprofessional – and the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) can’t read them.
