Five Reasons You Should You Send a Cover Letter Along With Your Resume in a Job Application

The first test when applying for a job is submitting a cover letter to accompany your resume. You would be surprised how many people don’t think to include one and then wonder why they never get any interviews.

Not only will a resume look naked without a cover letter, but employers also won’t give you a second chance. Here are five reasons why you should send employers a cover letter with your resume.

  1. Your cover letter is like a personal introduction – a virtual handshake that you have with a potential employer. It gives employers a brief introduction of yourself and should make them want to read your resume.

  2. Without a cover letter, employers have no idea who you are, why you want the job, or why you’re suitable for it.

  3. It makes the employer feel unique. A tailored cover letter can make employers feel like you are genuinely interested in the position instead of just cold calling.

  4. It shows you can follow instructions. If a job advertisement asks you to include a cover letter and you oblige, you’ve already shown the employer that you can follow instructions. Actions like these often speak louder than words.

  5. It gives you a chance to communicate anything you can’t typically communicate in a resume. A cover letter is a fantastic way to explain why you have a gap in your employment history or confirm your shift availabilities etc.

Just remember, some job ads will ask you to include your cover letter and resume as one document. Others will ask for your resume and cover letter separately. Make sure to follow what the hiring manager asks for your best chance of success.
